Paul Cézanne (French pronunciation: [pɔl seˈzan]; 19 January 1839 – 22 October 1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century. Cézanne can be said to form the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and the early 20th century's new line of artistic enquiry, Cubism. The line attributed to both Matisse and Picasso that Cézanne "is the father of us all" cannot be easily dismissed.Cézanne's work demonstrates a mastery of design, colour, tone, composition and draftsmanship. His often repetitive, sensitive and exploratory brushstrokes are highly characteristic and clearly recognizable. He used planes of colour and small brushstrokes that build up to form complex fields, at once both a direct expression of the sensations of the observing eye and an abstraction from observed nature. The paintings convey Cézanne's intense study of his subjects, a searching gaze and a dogged struggle to deal with the complexity of human visual perception.

塞尚由畢沙羅（Camille Pissarro）介紹加入印象派，並參加了第一屆印象派畫展。有人依他的風格也歸於後印象派。
塞尚認為「線是不存在的，明暗也不存在，只存在色彩之間的對比。物象的體積是從色調準確的相互關係中表現出來」。他的作品大都是他自己藝術思想的體現，表現出結實的幾何體感，忽略物體的質感及造型的準確性，強調厚重、沉穩的體積感，物體之間的整體關係。有時候甚至為了尋求各種關係的和諧而放棄個體的獨立和真實性。
塞尚認為：「畫畫並不意味著盲目地去複製現實，它意味著尋求各種關係的和諧。」從塞尚開始，西方畫家從追求真實地描畫自然，開始轉向表現自我，並開始出現形形色色的形式主義流派，形成現代繪畫的潮流。
塞尚這種追求形式美感的藝術方法，為後來出現的現代油畫流派提供了引導，所以，其晚年為許多熱衷於現代藝術的畫家們所推崇，並尊稱他為「現代藝術之父」。
由於他的小屋可以望見整座聖維克多山，因此他曾為此山畫過幾十幅《聖維克多山》的油畫作品。
